Our December 2002 trip starts on the Pine Ridge trail in Citico wilderness and climbs up to Fodderstack Ridge where we do a nighthike past Cherry Log Gap to this 4,500 foot high site I call Snow Camp. On the morning of Day 2 I prepare to strike camp and pack up the gear.
TRIP 15 December 2002
** Little Mitten Does a Nighthike to Snow Camp
** Mitten's Brush Mountain Hell Trip
Four Mile Ridge
**Brush Trailhead Camp(on South Fork)**
South Fork and OUT
DAY ONE Little Mitten and I parked at Warden's Field and walked up the Pine Ridge trail to the junction with the Fodderstack and took the right long uphill climb and then down. It was cold and there was much snow on the ground while we walked past the pretty hemlock site where we camped before last year. We walked and walked in the snow and darkness fell and we used our flashlights to get through Cherry Log Gap and the last trudge up to Snow Camp, the open tentsite, to camp in the cold snow and wind. Three other backpackers in two tents were here from Atlanta and one had a Hilleberg Akto. Mitten used my Marmot sleeping bag on this trip. In the morning we all talked and the boys took off down the Fodderstack to Big Stack and the Slickrock and out Big Fat Gap.
DAY TWO We packed and headed up the Fodderstack to the Bob tee where we took a break and then had a pleasant level walk in fairly deep snow to the summit of the Bob. We took a long break in the grass and saw a few other people, then we continued on the Bob trail and down to Naked Ground where we camped. I set up the tent and we did a dayhike to the Hangover. Beautiful.
DAY THREE This was Little Mitten's Hell Day so see attached notes. We packed at Naked Ground and headed up the ice and snow back to the Bob. Along the way we saw three hunters with Army ALICE packs coming down. We breaked on the Bob and then we continued to the tee and down to Cold Spring Gap and saw Jody Brown and a friend from the Little River backpacking store in Maryville going past us. We rested at the gap and saw three women dayhikers going up, then we walked down Cold Spring Gap trail to Brush Mountain trail and down it. It became a very hard trail to follow and I lost it once or twice. It was a long and arduous thing but we finally made it to Ikes Creek and then really hurt our legs and feet walking down the steep mountain and on the creekbed rocks. Long story short, we made it with little light to spare to the South Fork of Citico and camped by the Brush Mt trail jct.
DAY FOUR We packed it up and crossed the South Fork using a cable and log bridge Mitten discovered. A short walk and out to the truck.
