Trip 48 begins on the North Fork Citico trail and I stop at the Stump Site for a water break. The pack holds my boots as I'm in Crocs for the 7 main crossings of the day.
JOURNAL TRIP 48
ON THE NORTH FORK CITICO TRAIL: The first day of a backpacking trip finds me swimming in Johnny's Hole on the North Fork trail trying to cool off from humping a fully loaded 80 plus pound pack in this furnace which is the southern appalachians. It's so hot even Shunka wants to go in(and he did). I am loaded for bear with an overweight Dana pack and here are some of it's contents: 2 packs of rice cakes, a pocket radio with earphones, 2 Knudsen spritzers(a rare treat), the equivalent of 4 books and some extra bread and all of this should get me thru a planned 10 day trip. I hope to camp today at Camp Seven but we shall see.
I am hot but not so bothered as I sit at the Stump Site resting, drinking a green tea soymilk blend and writing in the journal. Tomorrow the big hump will occur as I climb up the North Fork river valley and hit the high trail , going up steeper and steeper until the open bowl section pushes me into the gap on the Fodderstack/BMT. From there god willing I'll go right to Snow Camp for the night and relax beneath the big hemlocks.
OVERNIGHT AT CAMP SEVEN ON THE NORTH FORK: My tent is up on the North Fork and the heat of the sun is bearing down on me and it is sultry. Annie's Roasted Garlic and Herb Pasta meal has been consumed for dinner and now I wait for sweet hops tea to boil and cool as my after dinner relaxant treat. There are few clouds in the sky but the sun beats thru them to broil the campers inside the Citico.
Ok, night falls and a candle brightens the aptly named Light Wedge tent, a shelter sitting flyless as I think about the evening sky and the condition and nature of its cloudiness or clearness. Tomorrow will be the time for the big climb out of this valley and up to the beautiful and spacious Snow Camp.
