Buckeye Camp is a fine camp next to Hangover Creek part way up the Nutbuster trail.
JOURNAL TRIP 48
The midnight hour comes to me and my camp on Hangover Creek inside a dark forest. At 7:30 first light is here and I am up to contemplate the day's events, notably climbing the Nutbuster up to the Saturday gap where I'm sure to see other backpackers including perhaps the Savannah Duo and the only packers I've seen this whole trip. I'd like to get their impression of the Nutbuster they walked yesterday, it'll be written on their faces. Am I up to it? Yes. Yesterday I awoke to Dylan's SENOR, today it is GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY. All Hail therefore Bobby Dylan and the genius that comes through to us in his words.
ON THE NUTBUSTER TRAIL -- 9TH TIME
Ok, I left camp at 8 am and now I sit on the trail at the high camp reststop drenched in sweat with some pesky mosquitos giving me their attention. Breakfast is a power bar as I sit on a low rock in the middle of this mystical kickass path preparing to enter the open cove of section 5. Though of course uphill it is still easier than what I just did and what comes after on section 6. There's some wet brush so I put the pack cover on and will take it off as soon as possible. Let's gear up and go.
I sit at the end of the Open Cove by the massive rock resting and cooling off in preparation for the Nutbuster Royale. The open cove is truly the prettiest trail I've ever walked, delightful and fulfilling, mystical, shadowy and wet.
Ok, I made it to section 9's Heath Overlook and so the best/worst is over. All around me swirls a cool fog at 5,000 feet and it's a welcomed relief from the blazing humid sun that has been the rule these last several days though today is hot but I'm too cool to be a hot sweaty mess though I am.
Wowie zowie but I made it to the Gap and therefore Nutbuster 9 has been completed! Upon arriving I found 3 youngish backpackers from Asheville packing up and heading down the Haoe/Jenkins trail to the Kilmer Loops and a camp on the Santee Lake, probably at Horse Cove campground. So far I have this place all to myself and the 3 kids told me I missed the Savannah boys as they headed over to the Hangover earlier but I did see their tent print on the ground. Dusk comes and so does a light rain as I sit in my tent in the gap of Naked Ground after eating 2 cooked meals and various snacks so I am stuffed.
