And so Trip 50 starts and ends on the South Fork Citico trail. By Day 4 I'm on Hangover Mt where I set up the Light Wedge in the spot which the forest service will clearcut and land a helicopter but this happens in 2007. It's a travesty of the Wilderness Act.
JOURNAL TRIP 50
Though it is very dry I sit on the bank of the South Fork naked, wet and clean after a needed swim in the cold waters of the Slisgah wilderness. Herein begins another long backpacking trip into the Citico forest and up the South Fork trail to Eagle Camp where I will sleep for the night. I left Little Mitten tucked in under warm covers and drove the bucking Leroy to the trailhead where Shunka and I embarked on another wonderful trip. Hurricane Katrina cut short my last trip and so I'll make up the difference this way by hiking with a full pack to the high ground and call it Trip 50.
OVERNIGHT AT EAGLE CAMP: Ok, here I sit at camp with my tent up next to a recent fallen tree which fell right onto the tent site whereupon my tent butts up against it. Dusk comes and with it the twilight sky gives up its light and descends to night while I sit up in my lodge loving this place and loving the sound of the water and the lay of the trail.
I layed down on the pad midevening and zonk! I was out like a bulb and only awoke some minutes ago to stare down the midnight hour on my cheap Aqua Tech timepiece, a disposable thing if there ever was one. Breakfast is over as the morning opens up with fresh light and cool air. I'm about ready to hit the trail and take on the hard uphill to the briar boulevard.
ON THE SOUTH FORK TRAIL: Ok, I left Camp Eagle after eating a hot kashi 7 grain cereal and left camp with a loaded pack where I sit now after battling the steep uphill to the level rocky cut. It DID kick my sac though the worse is over for a long while and if I decide to forego Iron Camp there'll be more to come. Iron Camp is therefore beginning to look alot more desirable as my night's haven.
Here I sit at the Ditch after having passed the pine rest cairn where I usually take a long break. I'm past that now and I'll shortly be at the trail junction with the Jeffrey Hell trail. Let me rest and enjoy the cool weather of this almost autumn September day.
